Inside the hospital, the new standalone Endoscopy Unit is nearly complete and will open shortly. Expansions to ICU/CCU, Theatres, CSSD and a refurbishment of the Day Procedure Unit, as well as the new medical centre and ward block are all due for completion in 2014.

Careful project management and planning has ensured there has been no disruption to patient services or access during the redevelopment.

Most of you will be familiar with the antenatal referral pathway.  The GP Handbook on the Fremantle Hospital and Health Service website under the “For GPs” heading has links to the Kaleeya GP referral and patient booking form. This form can be printed, filled in and given to the patient to bring with them, or your usual referral pathway can be followed and then posted to:

Ambulatory Surgery Initiative (ASI) at Kaleeya

The Department of Health Ambulatory Surgery Initiative provides open access for GPs to refer patients for a range of elective day procedures, including GI endoscopy, cystoscopy, ophthalmology and general gynaecology procedures. To be suitable for ASI, a patient needs to be less than 120 kg, without significant co-morbidity and ambulatory. ASI requires a GP to make a referral to a Named Participating Specialist(s). Naming multiple specialists will allow flexibility and reduce potential wait times. Importantly, patients must be given the choice of pathway options.

It is important all referrals include as much information as possible. For Obstetric patients, copies of all first trimester blood tests, urine and scan results should be included with the referral. Alternatively a hard copy of the pathology results can be sent directly to the patient to bring along with her to her booking visit. Providing results minimises the time administrative staff waste trying to chase them up.

• HIV in WA is most commonly in men, aged 45, with well controlled disease
• Increasingly, HIV diagnoses are being made in women and older heterosexual men

Due to successful treatment regimens, HIV is increasingly transforming into a chronic condition which can be managed in primary care. The aim of this training is for GPs to engage in a collaborative HIV shared care arrangement with a specialist.

This three hour evening update will provide you with the basic skills to manage the clinical care of people living with HIV in a primary care setting.

This course is suitable for GPs who are interested in:

• Improving their knowledge of HIV
• Contributing to the ‘shared care’ of people living with HIV in conjunction with their local specialist

Specialists from Royal Perth Hospital will be presenting this training on Wednesday 5th June and specialists from Fremantle Hospital will be presenting the training session below.  They will provide GP participants with a prime opportunity to engage with and establish specialist linkages with an HIV/Sexual Health in their local area.

This course is FREE for medical practitioners in WA. Costs associated with this course have been met by the WA Department of Health. Course participants will receive a range of complimentary membership benefits for the duration of the financial year, including access to the latest sector information.

You can still be eligible for future ePIP payments once you have completed requirements 1 – 5 and applied through Medicare for your ePIP payment.

Uploading Patient Health and Event Summaries

Some practices have reported errors when verifying patient IHIs.  It is important that all patient data is cleansed on the following fields in your software:

• First Name must not include any component of middle name even the initial 
• Ensure no spaces at the end of name fields
• Gender field must be completed
• Date of Birth must be in the format DD/MM/YYYY
• Medicare card details, including expiry date must  be checked and completed

 Assisted Registration Tool

Once you have received your HPI-O and NASH certificate you can apply for the Assisted Registration Tool (ART).  This enables you to register patients for their PCEHR.

Fremantle Medicare Local has an ART tool and can come to your practice to sign up patients and staff for their PCEHR or assist you to apply for the ART Tool.

The eHealth Team are available to assist General Practices that are working towards ePIP or are ePIP ready and to gain assistance to start uploading patient summaries.

The centrepiece of the campaign is a short film starring Australian‐born and internationally acclaimed actor Ben Mendelsohn. With the film being viewed more than 100,000 times in the first week, the people of Australia are certainly getting to know more about anxiety.

Viewers are encouraged to visit the beyondblue website to learn more about anxiety and the symptoms. Anxiety disorder fact sheets are also available to order or download, and lists of information and help lines, face-to-face support services, and online support and treatment programs is provided.

The campaign is based on qualitative market research beyondblue undertook in August 2012 through an online community with more than 350 Australians who have personal experience with anxiety.

The findings showed that there is a low level of awareness and understanding of anxiety in the Australian community, resulting in many people learning to live with the symptoms without treatment and support. The low level of awareness also brings high levels of stigma, further adding to the barrier of people seeking help.

beyondblue understands that this awareness raising campaign may cause an increase in patients looking for help for symptoms of anxiety, and encourages health professionals to be aware, informed and access the available information and resources on the beyondblue website where appropriate.
