How to manage warfarin bleeds: updated recommendations

The Australasian Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis have updated their warfarin guidelines covering areas such as preventing and treating warfarin over anticoagulation. Do you know what’s new in warfarin best practice and reversal? Find out what’s in the updated guidelines.

Using quality data to reduce practice complexity

A new NPS MedicineWise program called MedicineInsight will seamlessly collect non-identifiable patient information from existing general practice software, providing for the first time, a long-term and comprehensive picture of prescribing and clinical activity. How you can get involved.

Improve management of type 2 diabetes

By participating in a clinical e-audit more than a third of GPs changed their practice to incorporate absolute CVD risk assessment for people with type 2 diabetes. Find out how your practice compares to your peers. Register for a clinical e-audit.

Messages from NPS MedicineWise about colds and flu

Children’s cough and cold medicines

Do not recommend over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for children under the age of six. The potential risks outweigh the limited benefits and their continued use in this age group is not supported by evidence. Review the evidence

Antibiotic resistance and RTIs

Prescribing antibiotics for self-limiting RTIs increases individual and community risk of antibiotic resistance with little or no benefit for your patient.
Patients with a RTI may expect an antibiotic prescription.

The St John of God Murdoch Redevelopment is progressing rapidly with 3 tower cranes looming over the site. The project is proceeding well on all fronts with the new Wexford Medical Centre (pictured) soaring above Barry Marshall Parade and the new five floor South Wing ward block beginning to take shape.

Inside the hospital, the new standalone Endoscopy Unit is nearly complete and will open shortly. Expansions to ICU/CCU, Theatres, CSSD and a refurbishment of the Day Procedure Unit, as well as the new medical centre and ward block are all due for completion in 2014.

Careful project management and planning has ensured there has been no disruption to patient services or access during the redevelopment.

Referral to Kaleeya Antenatal Booking Clinic:

Most of you will be familiar with the antenatal referral pathway. The GP Handbook on the Fremantle Hospital and Health Service website under the “For GPs” heading has links to the Kaleeya GP referral and patient booking form. This form can be printed, filled in and given to the patient to bring with them, or your usual referral pathway can be followed and then posted to:

Kaleeya Hospital Antenatal Clinic

PO box 480

Fremantle

WA 6959

Alternatively, you can fax it to 9319 0325.

Ambulatory Surgery Initiative (ASI) at Kaleeya

The Department of Health Ambulatory Surgery Initiative provides open access for GPs to refer patients for a range of elective day procedures, including GI endoscopy, cystoscopy, ophthalmology and general gynaecology procedures. To be suitable for ASI, a patient needs to be less than 120 kg, without significant co-morbidity and ambulatory. ASI requires a GP to make a referral to a Named Participating Specialist(s). Naming multiple specialists will allow flexibility and reduce potential wait times. Importantly, patients must be given the choice of pathway options.

It is important all referrals include as much information as possible. For Obstetric patients, copies of all first trimester blood tests, urine and scan results should be included with the referral. Alternatively a hard copy of the pathology results can be sent directly to the patient to bring along with her to her booking visit. Providing results minimises the time administrative staff waste trying to chase them up.

Further information on services and referral pathways can be found on the GP Handbook.

Shared Care – What is the role of the GP in managing people living with HIV?

Did you know?

HIV in WA is most commonly in men, aged 45, with well controlled disease

Increasingly, HIV diagnoses are being made in women and older heterosexual men

Due to successful treatment regimens, HIV is increasingly transforming into a chronic condition which can be managed in primary care. The aim of this training is for GPs to engage in a collaborative HIV shared care arrangement with a specialist.

This three hour evening update will provide you with the basic skills to manage the clinical care of people living with HIV in a primary care setting.

This course is suitable for GPs who are interested in:

Improving their knowledge of HIV

Contributing to the ‘shared care’ of people living with HIV in conjunction with their local specialist

The centrepiece of the campaign is a short film starring Australian‐born and internationally acclaimed actor Ben Mendelsohn. With the film being viewed more than 100,000 times in the first week, the people of Australia are certainly getting to know more about anxiety.

The campaign is based on qualitative market research beyondblue undertook in August 2012 through an online community with more than 350 Australians who have personal experience with anxiety.

The findings showed that there is a low level of awareness and understanding of anxiety in the Australian community, resulting in many people learning to live with the symptoms without treatment and support. The low level of awareness also brings high levels of stigma, further adding to the barrier of people seeking help.

beyondblue understands that this awareness raising campaign may cause an increase in patients looking for help for symptoms of anxiety, and encourages health professionals to be aware, informed and access the available information and resources on the beyondblue website where appropriate.
